Types of membership
The IET offers two types of membership: individual membership and library-only membership.

The main requirement to become a member, in any category, is that you agree to comply with the IET Royal Charter and Bye-laws and Rules of Conduct. By agreeing to these, you are providing assurance of your professionalism and your ethical and moral conduct to your clients, colleagues and employers.
Individual Membership
The IET has five categories of individual membership.
- Student or apprentice;
Usually for individuals working towards a career in engineering and technology whether at university or on an apprenticeship scheme. - Associate;
Usually for individuals working in a related field or who simply have a passion for engineering and technology - Member (TMIET or MIET);
For individuals who have developed a standard of knowledge and understanding and are engaged in an activity relevant to the interests of the IET. - Fellow (FIET);
For individuals who have demonstrated significant individual responsibility and sustained achievement in their profession - Honorary Fellow (HonFIET).
For highly acclaimed individuals who have demonstrated exemplary contributions to the IET or their engineering discipline. Elected by IET Board of Trustees only.
Each category of membership has been developed to support our members throughout their career providing a professional home for life. If you are unsure which membership category to choose, please select the description below that applies to you the most:
- You have completed your studies and/or are currently employed;
- You are a full-time postgraduate student;
- You are a part-time postgraduate student;
- You are a full-time undergraduate;
- You are a part-time undergraduate;
- You are on an apprenticeship;
- You are retired;
- You are unemployed.
Library-only membership
The IET offers a library-only membership which allows non-members to borrow books and access electronic content services. Additional services such as copies of articles and search enquiries can be purchased at member rates. View the Library and Archive page, for further information on Library services.
Business partners

Armed forces
As a world-leading professional organisation for the promotion of science, engineering and technology, the IET recognises that engineers and technicians serving in the armed forces are highly skilled and play a critical role in the country's defence.
